I have a 1984 Mercury that will idle fine and go at slow speeds. When I try to go fast it will bog down like it is not getting enough gas. The boat had sat for a time without running and probably had some bad gas. I put a new inline filter on it but it never will fill up. The bulb gets full but not the filter. Shouldn't it fill up when I try and give it gas? Could this be my fuel pump?

I had a similar problem with my 25hp Merc. It turned out to be a sticking butterfly valve. It's got to be worth checking.

Hope it's that simple.

The fuel pump is the prime suspect. Check everything fuel delivery related from the tank pickup to the carbs. Ensure all fittings are tight, hoses good, etc.
Backlash

Took the pick up out of the gas tank and it was very clogged. I am guessing this is my problem. I will have to wait until tomorrow to take it out and see.

Did not fix the problem. It was better but not right. I put a new primer bulb on and checked the best I could for any air leaks. The bulb still does not want to get hard. My filter will pump up to about half full of gas and when I throttle down it drains out and nothing replaces it. Could this be the fuel pump? That is my next thing to try. I checked for air leaks by hooking the primer hose straight to the gas can and had the same problem. Someone please help!

dstuard,

Yes the fuel pump would be the next logical step.

Also, there will probably be a screen on the inlet of the fuel pump.

Your carburetors will also probably need attention.
