I recently purchased an 84 bayliner capri 5.0 with a v-8 engine (502fthrcra) and a omc sterndrive (983488). these numbers we're on the valve cover. I believe this is a 225 hp and a 280 outdrive? i have power to lights, horn radio, etc. but the engine will not turn over(not even a click from the starter) and the tilt makes no noise at all when i hit the switch either. i checked all fuses and wires i could find but found nothing. I never owned an inboard before but have basic mech.skills. this is my first post and could use any advice i could get on this problem and any other info.on the engine/drive. wiring diagram possibly, thanks.

Check & clean your main electrical connections + & -.....The starter & trim pump use alot of juice....Way more than the lights gauges.....JK

According to your engine info, your outdrive would be an 800 Series "Stringer" mount, "full mechanical" shift OMC. The "280" is a Volvo Penta model.... Bayliner used a lot of Volvo in 84, maybe you have a boat that someone has swapped an OMC engine into after the Volvo engine failed? But that engine would have been orig. coupled to an OMC 800 model.

This would be the perfect time to post some pictures of your engine and outdrive.

The OMC's had a big rubber boot that went around the drive and attached to the transom.

Here is a chart of the Volvo drives.

Volvo Drive Chart
