Thought I would start a post of my project boat.

1984 Chris Craft 214WA Scorpion.

I found this boat on CL about two months, said it was solid and ready to go. Well after viewing the boat it wasn't as solid as the owner thought. It had been in a field in North Texas for about ten years waiting for its new owner, me. It was a rare scorpion in the fact it had a 305 w/ a jackshaft and stern drive, most scorpions I've seen are the unliked open transom outboard version.

Plans for the boat, new floor and layout, new stringers, new transom, fish box and cooler, redo the T-Top, redo the center console, add a livewell, dump the 305 merc and stern drive, twin outboard bracket, twin 150 hp yamahas, paint and polish.

The boat had some storm damage and had the T-Top ripped apart and center console damaged. I have an aluminum welder so that's not a big deal to me.

It was named "Powder Monkey" because it carried the charges to sink old naval vessels off the coast of FL to create artifical reefs, then ran as a fishing boat out of miami running offshore.

After putting four new tires and rims on the trailer I crossed my fingers and towed it home about forty miles. All went well. After it got home, I realized the floor had some soft spots and the transom was weak. I cut the rear cap off and noticed the wood was toast.

The Powder Monkey as it sits now. Much demo already completed.

What I saw after I cut the transom cap off. Nasty!

Tanks removed, cleaning out foam.

Transom Skin Removed, hard to believe that's suppose to be two pieces of 3/4" Ply. Not much left.

Top corner of the transom, should I angle cut the new transom like this?

Awesome find! I am in the midst of a Scorpion refit myself. My Scorpion actually came from Florida as well, but found its way up to Canada, where I live. I am pretty much at the same spot you are, however I was fortunate enough that my stringers and transon were in great shape and did not need replacing.

How was the interior? Are you replacing it?

Is it a 21'? It looks bigger than mine. anyway, interested in seeing your progress. Unfortunately I am coming upon the winter months, and do not have an indoor bay to work from, so I am on hold until the spring.... Kinda bummed.

Check out my Scorpion:

Very pretty boat, and a good brand too.

What are you thinking of doing for the drive? New unit?

Not sure what you mean on the transom corner... make it that angle as opposed to what?

Re: 1984 Scorpion CC Restoration and Conversion

Im putting two outboards on back. It look bigger because it's a center console version not a bowrider. I hate I/O's, I don't mind inboards. I had a 28' sedan flybridge that was inboard and loved it.

In that transom picture, the plywood is cut at a 45 degree angle. Do I need to repeat that, or is a 90 degree cut and bedding fine?

Thanks, I'm starting to get addicted to iboats.

Another question for the pros.

What's the benefits or negatives of shaving the caps off the stringers and reusing the original glass walls and jamming a resis soaked board in, then reglassing the tops vs. bedding new stringers, tabbin them in, and wrapping in 1708.

I think most of the ribs the glass is weak, so those will need to be 100% new. But that would save a lot of time and itching.

I already have ten sheets of marine plywood, I think the ticket said it was fir.

Input appreciated, thanks
