I have a 4 cylinder mercruiser 3.0 liter. I put new plugs and new gas and a used carb on it ( I took the carb apart and cleaned it as well as I could). I have ran it and the first 20 seconds on the water she takes off...planes out and runs great...After that she wants to spit and sputter and run poor and die...If I am trying to take off I have to feather it and she usually just stalls. Today on the water I had my buddy driving and I went and pushed the choke half way closed at WOT...it ran great all the way back in. I think its getting the air it needs, but not the fuel, which is why half choked it ran fine...I"m not sure the shape of the fuel pump...I was going to pull the line off the carb, crank it and see if it shoots good? (any better ways to do this?) Then I guess its to a rebuild kit on the carb. I'm not sure how the accelerator pump works but could that be the problem? Its pretty hard to operate the lever with the linkage disconnected for the pump....is that normal? Thanks

Ok check the fuel pump it's giving you 4-6 psi no more or less.

Take apart the carb clean it real good and use a rebuild kit maybe 15 bucks any auto store should have it.

The carb you have has a yellow tube running out of it to the fuel pump?

If not get a marine carb.

What happened to the old carb.

You have a manual?

You didn't post who made this motor?

Take off the fitting that goes in the carb there is a filter in there. Clean it.

Fuel pump has a filter in it clean it.

There is a filter on the fuel pickup tube.

And a anti-syphon fitting- one way valve on the fuel pickup tube blow thru it make sure it's clean.

But what i would do if i were you is run the motor with a clean container with fresh fuel in it. An external tank in other words.

Your carb is full of junk and garbage.

Your onboard gas tank should have all the fuel pumped out and fresh fuel put in.

Ayuh,...

My Guess is, that carb is either Junk, or it needs a Real Rebuild....

Well I put new gas, some stabilizer and it ran great again a few seconds and then no good...I am calling right now for the rebuild kit...I do have the tube going down to the bottom of the fuel pump from the carb...Is that the anti-siphon tube you talked about? Should I be able to suck or blow through that, cause I can't? Thanks again for your help....I did check the filters...the fuel filter on the fuel pump and I put water in it and it barely drains out...sounds bad right?

The yellow tube from the pump to the carb is there to pump excess fuel to the carb if the fuel pump diaphram fails. It should be dry and not see any fuel in that tube if the pumps ok.

I think a carb rebuild and setting the float to specs would be the first thing i would do.

You put water in the fuel filter?? Don't understand that last post.

I think it runs ok the first few seconds because the float bowl is full then it starves for fuel. When you had it apart did you bend the float arm?

Thank you for your help...Yeah I think your right...I did not bend the arm, but the rebuild is a good idea...I just have to find out which carb I have...the tube is clean...makes sense now why I couldn't blow in it....so looks like I'm off to the rebuild....thanks again...yeah I took the filter out....filled the inside with water and it was so slow it took almost 20 seconds to empty out...

In your other post about the carb...
Ebasic has 2 different kits. One with the straight accel pump arm and one with the bent one..

You put water where exactly?

Use spray carb cleaner after you take it apart. Than blow it dry.

Make sure every little hole is clean, Use the new needle that comes with the carb.

You tested the fuel pump?

Use a external tank of clean fuel for now.

Post what happens.

Ayuh,...

Water is thicker than Gasoline....
And,...
A Gasoline Filter is made to Stop water....

If you want to Test it,.... Use Gasoline....
For that matter,... If you Think it needs Testing,...
That means it probably needs Replacing anyways....
