Hey everybody. I just picked up a 1984 Wellcraft 210 Elite. It has a 350 Chevy and I am pretty sure an Alpha 1 Gen 1. This is my first I/O. I hooked up the muffs and fired it up the other day. It ran for a few minutes and then water came out of the thru hull exhaust with some steam too. I found a small hole in the rubber exhaust hose and it got the distributor wet and it shut off. My question is does the water only come out when the thermostat opens or should it come out all the time if its working properly? Witht the rip in the hose I didnt run it anymore to see if it still came out.

So should it start coming out right away as soon as it starts? It took 5 minutes or so to start coming out the exhaust.

When was the last time the raw water pump impeller was replace? It should start pumping water in 10 seconds or so if the manifolds and engine are empty.

Lack of water flow is what caused the exhaust hose to get a hole in it. If you look at the hose it's probably all burned up inside.

Don, is the raw water pump the one in the out drive or on the engine? Neither one has ever been replaced by previous owner who had it for past 4 years and not used much. I had those muffs on it with the hose on, if the impeller was shot wouldnt the water pressure make up for that? The one on the out drive is on my list to do before I get it in the water. Should the one on the engine be changed too?

No water pressure is not enough to flow the water to your engine. I would start with the impeller in the drive. If the water pump in the boat were bad you would notice it leaking through its weep hole.

So after I replace the water pump impeller when the muffs are hooked up or it is in the water the water should start to come out of the exhaust right after starting it?

huh?

just replace the raw water pump and base assy in the drive - then hook up the muffs and you should see water coming out the exhaust fairly quickly

have a read in the diy/adults only section at the top of the forum board - lots of good info there for you to read through

Yes. If not then things are burning up.

When I first started it it ran for a few minutes then water started to come out. It took probably 3-5 minutes to start coming out and some steam came out too(it was 40 degrees out too).
