1985 115 HP Water Pump change??

I'm new to the boating world and just purchased a 1966 Thunderbird that I am in the midst of restoring. The motor runs, but need to replace the current water pump of the 1985 Johnson 115 HP. I took all bolts out that looked necessary to replace the pump, yet the lower unit only opens about an inch and will not completely come apart from the rest of the motor. I can see where the current water pump is, I just have no idea how to get the lower unit off. Any ideas? Thank you.
