I'm looking at a 85 E120tlco, before I call to set up a demo what should I be aware of? Price is $750 with boat and trailer. Boat is crap!!! Store owner said ther guy told him it ran good. I now have a 86 50hp rude on a 1987 18.5 starcraft alum. only 25-29mph. The orig 90hp rude is dead boat is rated for up to 120hp. Can any parts from the 90 be used on the 120? Or should I just get rid of that motor. Compression check?? The 50hp has 135 per cyl. What should be expected from a looper about the same? Then comes fuel I had a 88spl (89) got about 6 gal per hr on a 17 ft bonito. (glass) looking at all things iboats forum 12 gph is what the norm is on a 120 looper. Should I wait and repower with a fuel injected 90hp for increased gph.

Thanks for the replies I want to move quickley if this will be a good fit and deal.

Once you run a 120 you'll throw rocks at the crossflow. If the looper (120) has even compression (don't get hung up on numbers on a 2 stroke) and the gear oil is good, go for it. You'll be blown away.

Dhadley I appreciate your quick response. I have read many of your replys and you are well respected here. I posted to the merc. boards about a 93 merc. 90hp with less than 100 org. hrs on it and the only respoce was JB and he said it was a good motor when new. I guess if you don't have anything good to say say nothing at all!!! Back to the 85 120 rude I may just go for it although more support would be welcomed!

run premixed fuel, get the carbs clean, it will run forever. it is base of the forever running omc v4.

BUYING A USE MOTOR

overall condition, condition of the place you are buying it from, usually tells you how they care for things. compression 100 + psi, and within 10% of each other, good strong blue spark, no water in the lower unit oil. look for discolored paint, (sign of over heat at
one time, also scarred up bolts, as why. have them start it. if they fail to put it in a barrell or tank, or on muffs, or in the water, to start it they don't know what they are doing. best yet is to take it for a 30 min to 1 hour test run. also if remote controlled motor, the controls should come with it.
