Recently I posted this problem.
I removed the flywheel looking for a sheared key.
The key was in good shape. I didn't go any further to look at the reeds.
I brought it to a wrench and he agreed that it could be a reed problem. I told him that I removed the flywheel and found nothing. He asked if the hub with the notch under the flywheel was loose? I said I didn't know it could come loose. Is that a possibility?

hello
a certain amount of blowback is normal. should not really be enough to see with the eye. I would suspect reeds or a blown reed box gasket. if you decide to remove the reeds from the reed box mark them as to which side faces the crank. do not flip the reed. I reccomend just buying box assy. but if you do reinstall the reeds to the box make sure you loc-tite all the tiny screws. that is how my 120 got its piston. my buddy missed one screw and it went through # 3 cyl. I dont think a timing problem will cause blow back and no other major problems as the reed will seal no matter what or should unless its bad. check the timing with a light and that will tell if its timed or not.
good luck and keep posting

Is their steel hub attached to the underside of the flywheel that can come unattached and cause a poorly timed motor?

there is a hub in the center that has magnets, it goes into the center of the timer base.

2K, My wrench said the hub is attached to the flywheel and they come undone and that will throw off the timing. Did you ever hear of that?

The timing hub magnet is lightly pressed on and epoxied in place. Later models have a white line that lines up with a notch so you can see if it moved.

The hub coming loose is not unheard of, but it's pretty rare. A busy shop may see one a year or so.

From your description of the blowback, I doubt that the flywheel is the problem.

Dude...try the dollar bill test. With the engine idling, dangle a dollar bill in front of the carb. If it blows out, you probably got reed damage.
