cool,

How hot are we talking? Are you getting an overheat alarm? If not you are probably ok, because these motors just run hot. My temp gauge (which is just the L/H type) always reads just at the max at full throttle. The temp sender is measuring the head metal temp. not the water temp. Readings of 190-200F are normal, you won't get an overheat alarm until the head temp gets up to around 240F.

Are you getting a good stream of water out of the tell tale? Make sure its not blocked with debris. I would first check and change the impeller and the houseing if it is damaged. Also if the thermostats haven't been changed in the last couple of years I would do that to. If you are still overheating I would check poppit valve make sure there are no obstructions and the diaphram is working correctly. Also check your spark plugs, if one or more is very clean you may have a bad head gasket. All these problems will cause the engine to overheat, and all are fairly easy to fix with a manual. Good luck and let us know what you figured out.
CU

--------------------
RUNNING THE MOTOR WHILE LISTENING TO THE HORN WILL MAKE YOU MORN!!

You should see very little water (spurts) coming out of the tell tale at idle (when the engine is cool just after starting). When the engine warms up and heats the water around the block up to 140F the thermostats will open giving you more water flow (a good stream but still surging). At full throttle the poppet valve will open giving you even more water flow and a very heavy stream (almost a constant steady flow)..

If your overheating only at higher RPM's check the stats and Poppet valve first (assuming that you are sure that the water pump is working correctly)

What does your water stream look like?
