I just bought an old invader boat that has a 175 hp merc outboard sn 6619942.

I really can't find any information on this year motor. I believe the the sn number makes it a 1985 or 86 model.

I'm going to change the plugs and thermostat. any info on this motor will be helpfull or what I should be looking for in tuning it up for the late season here in so cal. as well

thanks

Look up the year by serial number and HP at Maxrules.com. Pickup a service manual.

You might like to test the poppit valve, as it is involved with the cooling as well. Replace the waterpump impeller, clean the fuel filters, grease the steering and tilt.

thanks, this is my first boat and I am new to the whole 2 stroke thing. I guess I just am confused the the way to read the websites and know what I need based on the s/n.

I do have a clymer book for it....in fact I have two.... one for the older models (90 and below) and one for the newer models.

how hard is it to replace the impeller or pump? can I remove the lower unit with normal hand tools (ie craftman) or do I need anything specific?

And lastly, can I do this all by myself? how heavy is the lower unit?

thanks.

Impeller is easy job. Any of your service manuals will guide you thru it. Gearcase unbolts with 9/16" open end and socket wrenches. You probably need to remove the zinc anode above and behind the prop, to get the final bolt holding the gearcase on. This will take an allen wrench or a thin wall 1/2" socket, to remove zinc anode.

I recommend you put motor in neutral before dropping gearcase. Purchase impeller, wearplate and gasket kit ($30), and replace all parts that will fit. You will have paper and oring gaskets left over. Grease driveshaft and shiftshaft splines before reassembly, and turn flywheel by hand to line up splines on crankshaft with splines on driveshaft. Don't force anything.

cool,

thanks. I was planning on changing those out as well. I just want to tune this thing up and see how she runs.

I am going to pick up a water pressure and temp gauge for it as well.

What about the six feet of wire that got pulled out?

Haven't watched the video, but it is probably the speedometer hose. I left mine disconnected because it was inaccurate.

Just watched. It's the speedometer pickup tubing for certain.
