1985 25 hp wont go into reverse

i have a 1985 Evinrude mod #e25rcos that wont shift into reverse unless you take your finger and lift up on this plastic shift pawl on the shift lever no more then an 1/8 of an inch and it goes right in reverse i think in just needs an adjustmine but how is that done does anyone know of this adjustment

well today i cleand the pawl off and hit it with some wd40 and held up on the plastic shift lever and worked it back and forth and it helped now i can shift it in f n r without holding the lever inside the engin compartment . its fixed.
