Hi there,

I have been steadily working on my boat for the past 4-6 weeks. It was new to me, brought up in a previous thread. Anyway when I purchased the boat all seemed pretty good, other than the things I have been fixing. I seen the outdrive and motor working no problem. So today I released the ratchet strap that had been taking weight off the outdrive and it just dropped. There was nothing holding it. I tried the tilt switch and it made a few click noises, but nothing else.

What are your initial thoughts?

I will start troubleshooting myself, but you may hit it on the head quicker!

No Title

UPDATE!.

So I have seen that this rod may be stuck, its been whacked by the look of it. Maybe when the outdrive dropped? What can I do with it?
Also the black box on the first photo appears loose and can pull off. Is that normal?

I can manually unlock the retaining device locking the leg down, and lift the leg all the way up and back down again. Is this normal? Is this because it has a mechanical lift and not hydraulics? Is that why it dropped when I released the ratchet?

thanks again.

Just clicks. Bad tilt motor maybe? That motor is just tilt. NOT trim. Use it either full up or full down.
Here is what i did on mine and it now works perfect
Get a manual.
Take the two screws off the black box you see in your pic and lift off the black box.
Remove both cap screws holding the unit in and remove it.
Once out take it apart and test the motor. If test good cool. If not replace it.
Once totally apart clean and inspect it all. Replace bent part.
Re grease all the parts and reassemble
Test on bench.
Re install.
The black box is only held on by the nuts on the 2 cap screws that go through the black box and it will never be held down tight. The nuts just rest on a little flange kind of clamping it down.

Hi Pat,
Thanks for the reply. On closer inspection this morning I found that the motor is making more of a whining then stops, in each direction. I'm wondering if the mechanical rod is jammed? The black box is actually really loose, and can pull on and off with no effort. It just seems to be resting on there.

I plan to remove the motor, box and anything else with that system. Can I do this from within the engine compartment, or do I have to remove the out drive? I do intend to remove it at some point so I can strip the terrible paint off it and try to restore it to original colour. The PO painted everything black with a hull paint and it looks baaad. I would rather do all that after I actually get the family out in it a few times first! Summer is flying by.

Thanks again!

The tilt is removed with 2 screws.
The black box has the tilt limit up and down switches and a switch for the light on the dash.
Don't mess with anything in there.
Just remove it as a unit.

The tilt assy. can be taken apart and cleaned and re-greased
Be VERY careful as there is a spring in there and it could have some pressure on depending on the position of the ram.

The end of the ram should have a flat adaptor to engage the drive lockdown release.
Make sure it's there.

These parts all still available but Volvo translated to English means CRAZY EXPENSIVE!!!

The lock down work?
The catches can be resurfaced to grab if not.Another EXPENSIVE item.

Post some pics of the parts when removed.

One more thing, On the bellhousing below the oil pressure sender is a grease fitting.
Make sure that you grease it on a regular basis.
No fitting? Then there is a slotted screw that can be removed and a zerk installed.
