1985 Mercruiser 3.0L serial number A385240. What is the correct timing procedure for this motor? Has the original points distributor still in it.
Tks.

What would the total advance timing for this motor be? I have changed out the points to a Pertronix also. Also cleaned and brushed all the advance weights in the dizzy at the same time as I added the Pertronix.

Most 4-cycle engines in the 8.5 to 9.5 compression range running on pump gas produce maximum power without detonation above 3,000 RPM at about 34 degrees total advance.

That chart is just the mechanical advance.
Take the chart reading and add in your initial timing to get total advance.

Try to use a dwell meter to set the points rather than a feeler gauge. Those distributors are known to get a lot of rotor shaft slop because there is no lower bushing. If the timing marks do not hold steady then you need to have the top bushing replaced and another one added to the lower end. With the points closed if you can push on the shaft and the points open then you should get it repaired.
