1985 40 hp Evinrude keeps cranking won't idle

I have a 1985 40 hp Evinrude. I prime the bulb raise the idle to start position but my motor just cranks and cranks. After a while of cranking it fires and runs. Smoke comes out and burns but when I turn the motor off after it is warmed up it takes a while for it to restart again. I also have another question. The motor does not like idle at low rpms. Any ideas of what might be the cause of these problems?<br /><br />Thanks in advance

You mentioned nothing about using the choke so I must ask....Is there a toggle choke switch under the key? Do you choke it when turning over?If there is, lift up on this switch(when cold)while using the key to start.

I have an electric primer solenoid that is activated when I push the key in while I am starting the motor. I am also not sure of which way the little red lever on the solenoid is suppose to be facing.
