1985 Mercury 50HP 4 cyl, SN 6587637. Out on the lake a few weeks ago and went to start the motor, fired then quickly died, no spark from that point on. Did some testing and found the stator was bad (ohm reading on low speed side way out of range) so bought a new one, installed it and still no spark. Here is where I'm at, can't figure out what I am missing.
First thing I took the kill wire off the power pack (black with yellow stripe). Using CDI troubleshooting guide as reference for all values, new stator tests good on both ohms and peak voltage. Trigger wires show correct ohms on each pair, no continuity to any of the 4 leads to ground, and peak voltage around 6volts. *Note, when I test ohms on trigger wires disconnected from pack/switch I read around 860, but when connected to pack I only read around 720, CDI sheet says 800-1400. Is this OK? Should I be testing connected to the pack or not?
I have also disconnected the stator wires going to the rectifier as it was mentioned somewhere if the rectifier was bad it could cause loss of spark, no change with them connected or disconnected.
I think the power pack is bad, have a local guy that deals in used motors and parts, he pulled a power pack off another motor that he thought was good, still no spark. Tried a second used pack, motor fired up immediately, ran only on two cylinders, the other two still had no spark. In the off chance we got two bad parts we replaced it with another used one, this time no spark on any cylinder again. I re-tested everything listed above, all tests continue to point to the power pack. Is this a case of bad luck with used parts and I should just buy a new power pack, or am I missing something here that I should be testing?? This guy says he's done swapping parts and has no interest in helping me, bring it back and he'll refund my money.
One thing to note the original power pack is a part number 332-5772A6, all of the replacement part numbers are 332-5772A1, guy I have bought the parts from said they were interchangeable, can anyone confirm this?
Thanks in advance for the help, great advice and knowledge on this site!
