am planning on removing the vro system when I take the boat out of the water for the winter. is it as easy to do like I see on videos or should I take it to a mechanic and have him do it?

What is your model #.----Not sure if 1985 models of the 50 HP came with VRO.-----It could have a newer powerhead installe.Easy to do.-----Use the VRO as the pump.----Or bolt a 2 nipple pump directly to the side of the top cylinder.

was planning on using the vro fuel pump. the motor came as a vro motor originally and the guy I bought it from had a new pump installed . the boat runs really good but every once in a while the horn will blow for a split second. gets me worried.

So is it the overheat warning or lack of oil ?-----Best to look at water pump / replace impeller here.

it is not the overheat warning. it is the oil warning.. when I first turn the key the warning horn will blow and I turn the key off and restart the horn will not blow. the last owner said that is telling you that the system is working. I keep on eye on the oil level to make sure I am using oil. it seems to be working . I just don't feel comfortable. oil is cheap compared to a new power head.

I just removed and replaced the vro on my 86 50hp with a fuel pump for an 84 model. The bolt holes are still on the block so no drilling or tapping needed. You’ll need to get additional fuel lines and cut to length as routing the fuel lines to avoid the starter was my only hurdle. You’ll also need to plug or block the old vro fuel pump suction or pulse source located under the bottom carb as it will no longer be needed.

Simple to do. Cut the oil feed line just before the connection into the motor, by the side of the fuel input. Plug the stub of the hose and make it air tight. Disconnect the connector carrying the wires from the VRO. This will shut down the oil warning.
Continue to use the VRO fuel pump as this is probably ok. No need to replace the VRO with a standard pump. Be sure to use 50:1 mix. The VRO fuel pump is a field service item, the oil pump is not. If you prefer to replace the VRO I believe your motor came with the block prepared for a standard pump. If so simply remove the plug from the block and bolt the new pump on. Fit new hoses. You will need to seal the impulse hose that powered the VRO. Or you can remove the fitting from the block and replace it with a 1/8 NPT plug as my memory serves.
