Have a question about a 1985 Merc that I'm hoping someone has run across before. Picked up a 17' Basstracker with this motor (1050555) a couple years ago. Had some trouble starting it up this year and found some issues when looking into it. Ended up replacing the stator and trigger (wiring severely rotted), new plugs and rebuilt the Walbro carbs on it. It now starts up great in my driveway with a hose on it. Repeatedly. But, 3 times now I've taken it out to a local freshwater lake for some fishing. Put it in the water, starts up great and runs great as long as I want. But after I've stopped to fish at a spot for awhile the motor just refuses to start. Prime the fuel bulb, set the choke and it cranks great but won't start.

Can anyone suggest a reason for this? I'm stumped.

Hello Willy.

Raise the warmup lever if you have one to give a little extra gas for starting.

What do you mean be set the choke? You have to push and hold the choke button or key switch while cranking. These things aren't like car where you floor the gas pedal to set the choke. You have use the button or pushed in key switch to keep the choke closed.

Yup, I've done that. Slight turn until that click where the solenoid drops the weight done. No difference.
