1985-70hp johnson backfiring

I have a 1985-70hp johnson thats backfiring a little bit when i try to start it. It will kinda start and then die. Not sure if I got the power pack wire to the coil hooked up right but I've tried every combination. I assume they go to the plugs using the length of the wire as where they should go. Also I have1987-70 hp carbs on it. Could that be the problem?
