Hello Everyone!

I have a 85hp Force Model #856x4l, I lost fire to the number two cylinder. I have it tracked back to the yellow wire that comes from the Stator area. I tested the wires feeding the coil on number one and two, they both have power when cranking it over. Do you think it could be the stator or would it be the trigger.

I guess i should of said how it happened LOL! I was at WOT first time for the season and was holding at 36mph with full gear and she decided all of the sudden she would only do 5 mph. I had a similar problem last year and replaced the bad cilprit (coil pack). and since i baught a spare was not to worried but it now tracks further back in the system.

I know most of yall are really busy and any light you could shed on the situation would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again to everyone for your help

You have me a little confused. You say you tested the feed to the coils and you had power. Then you say you traced it back to the yellow stator wire. The yellow wire is a voltage supply to the box. If it were bad, then you would have no power to the box and thus the coil. If you had power to the coil and it is good, then it must fire and the problem is not in the wire from the stator.
The power to the box from the stator and (I think) to the coil should be about 210-240 volts.
If you are getting this peak reading to the box, then the coil is probably bad, the plug wire is bad, or the plug is bad. Put a screwdriver in the plug boot and see if you get a good 1/2 inch long spark.

Sorry, I did sound confusing. I tested the light blue wire and the two yellow coming from the stator. One of the yellow wires has no power coming from it is what i meant. The two green wires going to the box for charging purposes had power and the others are like i stated. I am somewhat mechanically inclined, but i am new to this boat repair stuff, that was why it was confusing.

Do you think it might be the stator. Thanks for helping me with this, it is depressing not being able to fish.

That stator has two separate windings: One to charge the CD boxes and one to charge the battery. The two green wires charge the battery through the black rectifier. One green also feeds a signal to the tach through the purple wire.

However, if you have no power on one of the yellow wires, then the stator is bad -- Expensive!

If it were me, I would try using the extra blue wire (according to my Clymers, two are connected together either at the connector plug or at the terminal board--depending on which system you have.) in place of the yellow. But I think this would be a futile gesture-- I don't think it would work because yellow and blue are a paired circuit. But then again, it is AC voltage. might work on half the leg.

I think i am just gonna buy a new one, I live in Arizona and do alot of night bass fishing. Nothing sucks more than getting stuck at night. Anyone recommed a god online dealer for the stator. I founf one for 144 dollars but they are out of stock.

When you go to pull the flywheel, don't use a gear puller--It won't do the job. Make yourself a nice meaty flywheel puller with 3 holes for the 1/4 inch bolts that screw into the flywheel and a good solid fine thread center bolt--at least 1/2 inch. Screw in the 1/4-20 bolts all the way then tighten the center screw a lot. Grunt on it. Wedge a tire iron under the flywheel and rap the center bolt a good one with a heavy fine adjusting tool (I use a 3 pounder). If it doesn't let go after a few tries, use our friend heat on the flywheel hub. Heating the center with a propane torch is sufficient. It should pop up.
To re install, tighten flywheel bolt to 90 foot pounds. Too loose and you will snap the woodruff key when you run the engine. Too tight and you will stretch the hub--it won't lock onto the crank taper properly.

Re: 1985 85hp force HELP!

I used a harmonic balancer puller, it popped right off. Does anyone know the fasted and easiest place to order a new stator is. Last time i ordered a part it took allmost three months to get it. I ordered it online and it did not tell me it was backordered till i called 3 weeks later.

Yall have been an enormous help, sorry my typing and spelling sucks. I am just in a hurry and anxious, I am sure yall know how it feels when the boat goes down, it is my escape from reality when i am on it just relaxing.

Well enough rambling, if anyone recomends some please let me know or anyone has a good used one i will buyit. I am just trying to get through the next couple months.

Keep us updated, I'm having the same problem, no fire to #2. Have you tried local marinas?
