Looks like there dhould be a 90 degree bend to catch the notch in the base.
I can try bending it if necessary.
The lower right picture is the starter.

It's a link to their home page, not your pictures...
The end probably broke off of the spring. You can bend it by heating it up as a temporary fix but it will break again sooner than later. The best fix is to replace the spring.
