Regarding the welch plug on the upper gear case. On alpha one diagrams, it shows that there is a "pipe plug" which is threaded into the gear case and it sits under the welch plug which sits under the sticker. The inner or pipe plug was not present when I noticed that my outer plug popped out this winter. Is it safe to say that in 1985 Mercury only used the single plug system versus two? Or could the interior pipe plug have sucked into the gear case? Or lastly, perhaps it was not reinstalled when someone changed the shift cable in the past?
