1985 and 1989 Johnson 90hp VRO parts interchangeable?

Hey guys,
I have 2 outboards, one is a 1985 and the other ones is a 1989 they look identical, they are both VRO and they are both 90hp with tilt/trim.

The model number for one is: J90TLCOS
The other isJ90TLCEM


when I look parts up I notice some are different #’s between the 2, like the flywheel and stator are different numbers for each motor.

my question is are they actually different parts or are they all interchangeable and they just happened to change the part #’s?

Many , all mechanical parts interchange.----Electrical parts work the same way but may be different part numbers due to length of wires , eyelets or plug in connecters.

Perfect, so worst case if I need an electrical part I may have to lengthen the wire or solder the connections together?

Or swap out the entire ignition system.
