1985 bayliner thumping

[my three sons]

I have a 1985 bayliner 5.0 w/omc cobra- after initail take off there is an additional thump like a spline slip- it only happens one time after initial engagement forward- any ideas on what to look for?

Sounds like the clutch dog slipped one notch. You need to verify that your lower shift cable is adjusted properly. i wouldn't run your boat again until you fix this because you will ruin the clutch dogs.

thanks for the advice- I have an employee workday this friday june 1st- no chance to get it into a shop this week- can you direct me on how to check and make the adjustment?

I should say I am very handy mechanically as I own an automotive repair facility and sold my hot rod to buy a boat??????
