I have to replace the transom on my 1985 16' Bayliner Capri cuddy. The transom is slightly bowed. I am leaning towards using NIDA bond. My question is if the transom is supposed to be bowed or is it only bowing because it is damaged?

Thanks

Re: 1985 bayliner transom

I can only speak for mine but I have a 87' bayliner capri cuddy 17ft. and my transome is not bowed. My transom does not extend all the way across the stern either. I have an outboard attatched to it. Hope this helps.

I have not seen a Bayliner with a curved transom. I would hedge a guess that it is not supposed to be that way.

I agree, it is not supposed to be bowed. How bad is it? Could you post up some pictures?

I will get pics in a few weeks. Do you know if I can access the entire transom and take it out by removing the cap? I don't want to cut into the glass if I can help it.

If you remove the cap then you should almost certainly be able to access everything.

I am considering seacast but worry that if the transom is bowed I will pour a bowed transom with seacast.

My boat has a 3' by 8'' removable board down the middle of the floor. Does it need to be this big and what is it for?

Thanks for the help.

Either a ski locker or access to a built in fuel tank

I have a 94 Bayliner 19', so we're not talking about the same boat here, but my tansom does bend. It doesn't curve as much as it's a subtle bay window kind of thing. It's flat in the center, then does a 10 degree or so angle fore. I don't have a stern-wide transom, though, it's hull with plywood pieces mounted in strategic points. A lot of pics are in my resto thread, link in my sig.

My transom is similar. It has three seperate pieces. I don't understand how it is structurall sound enough to hold the motor. If I replace the center board how do I cement it to the outside skin? The interior side is falling apart. Do I re-glass the inside once the new wood is in place?

The whole transom should be replaced as ONE PIECE. The whole point of a transom is to distribute the weight/force of the motor evenly over the whole transom. A 3 piece transom will not distribute weight like it should.
