Does the appearance of the exterior of these v6 coils give any indication of their condition, similar to the appearance of the charge coils on a stator when it is bad and showing signs of melting tar oozing out the coils?<br />Reason for my question, my twenty year old coils are not oozing any tar however, the exterior finish have the appearance of a kid with the measles, not a smooth surface like on a new stator's charge coils  .

Cracking is a bad sign. We just went through all kinds of hell on a relative's old 1980 175 V6, blaming everything except the coils. Ended up it was three bad coils. Actually ended up at the dealer when we gave up. They replaced two, and it was much better, but still a problem. Brought it back, and they replaced a third.

Got a 1975 9.9 with the original coils that look like rust balls. They still work just fine.

Couple little things to check, if all sparks are jumping at least a 7/16" gap, that's good. Also, check the engine at night while running. Look for any sparks jumping from the coils to ground. Can't see none....that's good. Keep on truckin'..... :)
