I picked up a 1985 Evinrude 140HP looper, and finally got the boat out of storage, to hang the motor.

I have a 4 wire tilt/trim lead going to the tilt/trim motor. Blue, Green, and a twin-black lead. I'm not that familiar with these motors (Evinrudes), so I hooked the negative battery cable jumper to the black twin leads, and put the positive battery cable jumper to the Blue lead, to see if the tilt/trim "UP" would work. NOTHING HAPPENS.

Then, I tried the positive jumper to the Green lead (DOWN?) and still nothing happened.

What am I missing in this?

Thanks

A 1985 140hp Evinrude would have a dual polarity PTT electric motor, meaning that the electric motor would only have two wires leading to it... a green (UP) wire and a blue (DOWN) wire. Positive voltage applied to the GREEN wire with the Negative ground wire applied to the BLUE wire at the same time would result in having the UP mode applied... reversing the voltage wires would enable the DOWN mode.

The PTT operational switch applies voltage (up/dn) to a junction box consisting of two relays that handles the voltage switching.

You have an electric motor with four (4) wires?
What is the model number of that engine?

It's a E140TLCOS. I have what looks to be a twinlead black (maybe that's for the trim gauge?), and then the blue and green leads. I thought (like Merc outboards), the ground is chasis, and the blue is UP, the green is DOWN. From your post, it sounds like the blue/green are polarized, and the green being grounded, with the blue having positive, would activate the motor, and vice/versa, depending on up or down trim via the trim relays in the relay box. That would explain why I had no action?

The other two wires may be for the trim sender.

Yeah; that's what I was thinking. I have the Factory Service Manual, but the wiring was cut when the motor was removed, and it wasn't clear to me what I have in terms of the wiring to the trim motor.

thanks
