There seems to be a seep hole next to a bolt on my upper gear housing ( pic attached) that oil comes out of slowly (into the water) when I run the motor in a trash can. I am wondering what the purpose is for this since I cant find anything about it. it looks like a 1/16th hole drilled upward right next a the bolt that holds on the leg directly above the gear oil fill plug. Anyone have an idea? quite a bit of dark but thin oil accumulates in my 33 gal trash can while running the motor. seems to be from the 2 stroke oil it smells like it.????? When I tilt the motor up after running it, alot of water runs out too.

It's a drain. The 2 strokes don't burn all the fuel and oil. Some leaks from the carb.
Water actually gets up inside the housing and will drain out after you pull the boat.
Absolutly normal, unless you have LOT LOT LOT in the can.
How does it run normaly?Jerry

Runs pretty smooth but seems to smoke alot-light blue- I think it may be running rich? I ran seafoam through with gas for 15 min then ran without and then changed plugs. the brand new plugs were wet when i pulled them after running for an hour.

2 strokes will oil up the plugs, normal.
Keep on top of the maint.Do a compression test and keep the oil in the lower changed.J

Came across this thread accidently and glad I did. My 40hp has the same hole which I thought was a break and leaking gear oil. Was going to try to stop it with washers but won't do it now.
Thanks!
