Hey yall. I just bought my first boat and it has a 1985 Force 85 HP motor in it. I want to replace the water pump. I emailed iBoats about getting the kit for this motor and they sent me here and said that they do not carry them for this motor. Has anyone bought a kit for this motor before? If so where? Also does this follow the same instructions that are given in "Step By Step Impeller Change" post to replace?

I got my kit from ebay MAX motor sports has the full kit with the housing for around $60

Also, you should definitly get an OEM service manual and/or a Clymer manual if you plan on servicing this motor yourself. They will walk you through almost any procedure. The step by step sticky post on iboats is great too.
Good luck

Ok, sweet. One more thing. When I run the engine with muffs only a small amount of water comes out of the back where the weep holes are but a alot comes out of the exhaust snout. Why is this? Is this normal?

Sounds normal. You won't get alot at idle on muffs but as long as you have some you should be good. I never felt comfortable enough (or able to get the muffs on well enough to be comfortable with it) so I use a big plastic bin and make sure i fill it enough to cover up to and over where the waterpump is in the lower unit. I recently installed a telltale (see the sticky on the main page) which is a good indicator that the waterpump is working.

Welcome, at the beginning of this Force forum there is a step by step impellar
procedure written by Frank A. Print it out and follow it. He has tips in there the manuals don't tell you. The man knows his stuff. Also you may want to bite the bullet and buy a kit that has the impellar housing with it. An engine of that age will probably need it if it has never been changed before. You can find them on ebay and crowleymarine.com. I'm sure other places have them but those are two I know of. Good Luck and happy boating! O.T.;)

The reason for your lack of water/exhaust out of the two back holes is that they were designed to work when the foot is beneath the water at idle ,there's usually not enough pressure to force it out the bottom so it goes out the relief ports on the back, once you get some speed up ,the motor makes more exhaust pressure and the foot leaves a void behind it to allow it to come out the bottom around the prop. hope this help you................MOPARMAN ROLL TIDE
