I posted the other day and was told to decarbon for compression problem. 1st 120 after 120 2nd 85 after 85 3rd 100 after 120. Put some oil in 2nd cylinder and jumped to 110. Sprayed cleaner in cylinder ran dry started motor let run for about 5 to 7 minutes did check 80. Called shop here in phoenix sayed need to rebuild 2,500 and said a kiss was not included. Man i only gave 2,500 for hole boat. Can anybody help me with this problem of what i need to do. Worked on cars and bikes is this something i can do myself. And can i only do rings in that cylinder or am i grabbing for straws. Or is that even the problem and could it be a blown headgasket. Any information will be appreciated.

You may be able to get by with only rings, as it jumped up with the oil. Have to pull head off to check extent of damage, and you can check the headgasket at the same time.

For $2500, do they at least use some lubricant?
I would see how bad it is, if total rebuild is needed, I would part out the motor on ebay, and use the procedes to help fund a newer motor.

I would remove the head and look very close at the head gasket, try to remove gasket without tearing or touching with fingers, then look at cylinder. I did engine today that had 30 lbs difference between cylinders, cylinders looked good, and gasket only had one small dimple. New gasket all cylinders now same.

I appreciate the help guys. I was looking to order headgasket and my boat is a 1985 but when i looked up the number on dollar offshore it said 1986, is this common? And should i go ahead and order rings they are only 14.00. And can i only do one cylinder if need be. Will it hurt anything if i run the boat like this till i get parts because i rather have parts in hand before i tear anything down. THANX P.S. I know this is kinda backwards way to do it but new to boating and love it (and bonus wife does too.)

first off cards if your going to go through that much trouble to replace rings on one just hit them all and save yourself some trouble later on.have tried doing only one and ended up having to do the "other ones" in less than a year.besides your already there.the gasket for the 85 should be the same as the 86.mine ran about $7.00.but your going to need more than just a head gasket though.more to changing rings than you might think.easy to do just a lot of things to keep up with.good luck.
