Problem was solved with replacement manual relief screw

So i mounted new/old motor, got it running and having problem with trim/tilt

Have topped off fluid but it seems like the lower rams work but the center one doe nothing. I should say the lower ones dont really work like they should. When the motor is in the up position and I refill fluid the up button will run the trim motor but no action at rams. If I manually lift motor to flip the safety lever and let go the motor will stay tilted until I hit the Up OR down button, either buttom caused the motor to slowly fall. When I have the motor tilted up with the saftey lever engaged and run the trim motor the small lower rams go in and out slowly but no action at center large ram.

Plus when I purchased the motor the only way to raise it for adjustments to mount it on boat I opened up the manual release screw to raise it. Now it seem like I can grab the motor and lift it(with a good bit of force, not hernia inducing but..) all the way up to top position without even loosening the manual release screw.

Cant see any leaks when pump is running or when lifting motor by hand. Pump sounds good in either direction.

Re: 1985 johnson 115 trim problem

Are you sure you have the trim system completely bled? Sounds like you may still have some air in the system. If you refill the reservoir, then run the trim up/down a few times, the system will purge the air on it's own. Just keep filling the reservoir, the run the trim up/down a few times. It's possible the manual relief screw is either loose (not screwed in fully,) there is dirt/debris on the tip-preventing full seating or the tip is damaged-you should not be able to move that engine when the manual relase screw is normally/properly seated in it's housing.

Problem solved! It was the manual release screw. I had a spare form my old trim and tilt unit, swapped them out and motor trims up and down fine now. It wasnt leaking but must have been damaged in some way.
Thanks everybody.
