i was try to replace the seals in the bearing houseing and pulled the bolds from down inside but wonder if the bearing houseing unthreads from the lower unit case or how it comes out ? i do not want to break anything ..
The carrier has to be pulled out with a puller to do the job that way.
Service shops have tools to pull the seals with the carrier and shaft in place. You can use a Lisle Shaft Type Seal Puller #58430 to pull both seals if you can run one down; they run around $18.-$20.00. You would still need a tool to install the seals with the propeller shaft in place - maybe a short section of pipe would work.
When you attach the puller, you may have to lightly heat the gearcase at the contact points with the carrier to free the carrier, but it is basically easier with a slide hammer.
If you have the seal kit, it has the large o-rings to reseal the carrier. I have pulled the carriers with rope and a lever in a pinch, but when they stick, they really stick.
i guess i didn't get the kit ,, so i'll try leaveing the carrier in and figure out how to get that tool to get them out .. from the looks of the diagram it looks like both seals go back to back but one thus and the other reverce? so if thats the case i won't have to mess with the bearings maybe put a little greease before reinstalling new seals..
