I apologize if this has been answered somewhere already. A few searches have yielded results in which suggestions were made to remove the part as it's not needed. Mine is leaking and the part is obsolete. The posts I found with search were hinting to 1993 thermostat parts to make the cooling system work correctly if the control valve assembly were removed. What exactly do I need to do to remove the control valve assembly and make the cooling system work appropriately.

The modification involves removing the flow control valve and all associated water lines, and removing the thermostat covers and diaphragms. You'll then install thermostat covers, springs, and gaskets from a 1990 70 hp engine (you can use the existing thermostats).

I am going through the same issues with a 1986 Johnson 140. So after installing the 70 hp covers, springs, and gaskets I should be able to just remove the nipple from the block and install a plug to stop the water flow for the control valve?

Sorry I got lost with this project and haven't posted back. I currently have not made the change to my Johnson yet but probably will this fall as this is my other boat that doesn't see much use.
