Well I was changing the t-stats on my motor and on one side I broke off all four T-stat cover bolts.Kind of odd that on one side all four bolts came out fine. But anywayz I decided to take the head off and take it to work and machine the old bolts out and install helicoils(I'm a machinist).

(The head bolts came out fine and look to be in fine shape)

Well I'm just waiting on my new head gasket to come from I boats and was just wanting to double check a few things.I bought an online manual a while back for my motor and it has been helpful for a lot of things but it does leave a little to be desired.

First-do I need to apply anything to the head gasket ie sealer

second-It has numbers cast onto the head.I believe that to be the order in witch the bolts are to be torqued.

third-does 18-22 foot pounds sound about right?

fourth-should I torque like half that one time around and then go back around at full torque?

anything else I should know before installing a new head gasket would be appreciated.

Thanks Shawn

tighten them up, then torque them in sequence. the gasket will say no sealer. if it does not, the use sealer. sounds like that side had run hot for the bolts to break. exact torque i cannot comment comfortable.

What type of sealer should I use if the gasket does not say anything?

Re: 1985 johnson 140

So I received my new head gasket and it does not say anything about sealant. It looks to be a plastic gasket with a metal ring around the cylinder holes.I reread my manual and it says nothing about a sealant.I've read some stuff on the net that says to never use sealant on a head gasket. Some stuff just says to stay away from the copper sealant.

I'm now confused anymore help would be appreciated.

Thanks Shawn

If the gasket is shiny on both sides then it has a sealer on it.

Torque cylinder head bolts to 20-22 ft. lbs.

The raised numbers on the heads adjacent to the bolt holes are the order of tightening.

The rubber gaskets on the thermostat cover require no sealant. Be sure that the small holes in the gasket are clear and aligned with the openings in the cover. I use a lttle Triple Guard Grease on the thermostat cover screws because I check the thermostats regularly.
