Im new to working on outboards, I just bought a mariner 4M and it runs great but rev's up when i put it in neutral. I was told to adjust the carb (i have worked on lots of small motors before just not outboards). There is a black plug about half way down on the housing towards the lower unit. What is this plug for? At fist glance I thought I could put the water hose connector thing there to run it out of the lake so i could adjust the carb.

sounds like your talking about the the hole in the foot to check the gear oil all you need to run it out of the lake is a set of muffs, with you can pick up at any boat place or wal-mart, ect. you can adjust the carbs out of the lake but the final adjustment need to be on the water to get em right

This hole is a lot higher up than that one, the plug is black rubber about the size of a half dollar. I guess I will get the muffs to get it close to being right.

I just got done checking out the motor, there are also two screws on the upper portion of the side of the lower unit. One labled oil one labled wash. What is the wash one for? Is that where I hook up the Muffs?
