I have a 1985 60HP, 3 cylinder Mariner. I do have a service manual for it. The motor was used when I
bought it. According to the manual the gray wire from the harness connector is connected to the yellow/
red wire post on the rectifier. But on my motor the gray wire from the harness connector is connected
to the positive post of the rectifier. Is my motor wired wrong? My motor is not running--could this be
the problem? Thanks again for all the help you guys have given me in the past--this is an excellent
forum!

Well I guess no one wants to answer my questions so I will try another forum.
Thanks!

The grey wire should power the Tachometer. It would therefore be connected to one of the yellow/red stator wires, at the rectifier. If the rectifier shorts to ground, you could have no spark. Disconnect all stator wires and tape them to insulate them and see if spark returns.

Chris: Thanks a million for your response. I will do what you say and then post if that
corrected the problem. If I forget to post the results--forgive the ole man. Again thanks
for your help!

Yes, the spark returned after I taped all the wires from the stator to the rectifier.
So I reconnected all the wires and "pronto" the motor cranked. Still got a "miss"
that I am working on. Thanks again for the help!
