I have a Tempest w/ a 228 hp that has an ignition problem/s. I'm looking for the advance deg. @ what rpm for max advance? It has a Mallory distributor with adjustable advance wieghts. The coil now is losing the oil out of it? The boat is slugish out of the (hole) and can not reach WOT of 4300 rpm, gets 3500 rpm approx. Also the boat starts well cold but after a run of 20 min. it is very slow to turn over-seems ignition related!! Sorry for all the questions here but I believe I have ignition problems here. Also what is the volts on the primary side of the coil while running?

Thanks in advance
Scott

First get a new coil. Then check the voltage at the + side of the coil. It should not be over 9.5 volts.

Your coil should have a ballast resister fitted hence the 9.5 volts f no external ballast is used then the switched supply from the Ign switch may have a resister wire incorporated.
Too much voltage may cause your coil to "cook" and overheat.

Not sure what engine, drive year you have but in the OMC 230 5.0 I think it is 21 degrees advance at 3000 RPM.
