1985 Merc Black Max 150 - Comments/Suggestions

Hello all!

I'm considering the purchase of a 1985 Hydra-Sports 18' CC with an '85 Merc 150 on the rear. I have been told that the motor was in good running condition in the fall when it was last run and it had a good compression test last spring.

When I go look at the boat/engine is there anything specific I should watch out for? Ask about? Etc. I'm after a good first boat that I can do novice maintenance and repair. Is this engine a good place to start?

good engine , wouldnt recommend boat, just personal reasons, aint had a good hydro yet, try old ranger, or terry , orprocraft. or cajun,

Mainly insist on your own compression test. I have an '86 Mariner 150; it's a good strong motor. I have compression readings between 118-121 on all cylinders. Beyond compression, give it a good looking over, the wiring on my motor had gotten some corroded ends on the switchboxes and coils; easy enough to fix, but a real PITA when you're on the water. Fixed a couple while bobbing up and down on the swim-step.

Yes, I have a feeling the wiring for anything electrical on this boat may need some work, as it is kept out in the elements uncovered. I will have my own compression test done and frankly have a mechanic give me his impression before purchasing any boat.

Hopefully I'll have a chance to run up the coast and look at her on Friday.

Compression check, spark test, and I`m surprised nobody mentioned the lower unit. Check the lower unit`s gearcase oil for any metal shavings and pay close attention to the color of the oil. Milky colored oil suggests water in the lower unit which means a leak. This could cost you alot of money to fix...
