1985 mercury 50hp foward gear question

working on my friends 50hp 4 cyl.
and when i shift into reverse the prop locks in both directions meaning i can turn the driveshaft with the prop in both directions

now when i shift to forward it only locks going counter clockwise it wont lock clockwise and i can only turn the drive shaft counter clockwise

is this normal?

i did start it on muffs and it will shift in forward and neutral and reverse

could the forward gear be bad
and how hard is it to take this lower apart

Bob;

That is quite normal. Do not try to turn the diriveshaft, you only have to use finger pressure.


Fwd: Turns CW (ratcheting), will not turn CCW
Neutral: Turns freely in either direction
Reverse: Will not turn in either direction
