My first time rebuilding having trouble testing hole shot motor on trailer strapped in lake and having trouble on first start up but fine after it starts first time stalls a 1/3 throttle checked timing seems fine but wonder if carb linkages like couplings could be the cause or carbs even though rebuilt

That motor will have fixed high speed carb jets. If the idle pickup timing is correct, and the max spark advance is correct (these can be set on land), and the motor gets above 1200 RPM, with smooth acceleration, you have it adjusted correctly. I would recommend you test acceleration when in the water, off the trailer.

Ive also noticed I have a possible problem with my couplings top carb seems to open before bottm 2 can this be my problem. and do those old couplings have a tendency to twist causing un even throttle operation?

The couplings are adjustable. They tend to twist after a while, so reset them so the carbs open at the same time.

These motors suffer from transition from idle jet to main jet. Recently did one and sho nuff that was a problem. Just need to run the idle jets a little on the rich side.
