Hey everyone a friend told me about this site and wow what a vast amt of knowledge is on here......amazing

Quick question i bought an old 1958 SA and from what i can tell has barely been tampered with maybe some carb and ign tampering at the most.....the unit has good compression and all the ign stuff looks to be mint.....i cleaned the points with a small piece of 600 grit some fresh gas and bam it started after the second pull....it runs at slow and idles very well....i tried to put it up to the fast position and it doesnt wanna pick up speed...heres the thing once i turn off the fuel while its running as it near empty in the fuel bowl it has no problem doin fast.....heres what ive done so far

Complete carb cleaning
did a reset on the carbs adjustments they were right outta wack
cleaned the points

wondering if anyone may have come across this kinda issue

im think once u reset the points and replace a new plug/gap it might sort out the issue
any help would be greatly appreciated
cheers

Meant to type 1958 instead of the 1985 for the year

Don't quote me but I believe it picks up speed as the mixture changes when your running out of gas. Most motors do that.

When it's running at that spot where it won't pick up speed try turning your high speed needle one way or the other a little at a time (as in going from clock positions 12 to 2 or 12 to 10. Give it about 15 seconds to respond. See what happens. It it gets better keep going until it starts getting bad again. You'll hit the sweet spot by gradual adjustment. As for the lower unit: It uses grease. The current replacement for the gear grease is Lubriplate 105 (Napa has it).

Let us know how you make out.

I've been told that John Deere corn head lubricant works as well. I have it it my 61 sea king three and my scott atwater 1-16 5 hp. seems to be ok. Had them both out on the water today!

Re: 1985 Scott-Atwater 3.6

awesome guys thanks for the reply on this

Little update i tried a few different positions/setting it runs and idle pretty decent.....tried to get it to go from slow to fast has become the main issue now......just bogs down and by the water condition after use its pretty messy from unburnt fuel...i have the manual on this and applied all the setting to the initial recommended ones....wow for such a simple design there some pretty precise tolerances....im about ready to send this into a outboard mech for further advice.....it has a tillotson aj16 carb on it.....anyone on here guru's on these

Thanks

Re: 1985 Scott-Atwater 3.6

I'm going to follow this thread because I came across a 1957 Hiawatha 3.6hp. From what I've found out it's made by Scott-Atwater. This is the model# 75-OM-325-7960B.

Mine sounds almost identical to yours. First problem I've come across is getting the fuel cap off. I had to take a pair of channel locks to it and found out why it wouldn't come off. Threads were stripped. What made it worse, is it's plastic? If I may ask, is yours a plastic fuel cap?

Didn't mean to highjack your thread.

if you have basic hand tools and enjoy wrenching, there is no need to take the johnson to any shop! it will cost you more for labor than for the parts it will take. start a thread in the johnson/evinrude forum.....you will get every bit of help you need to get it running like a top.
