I have an 85 2 stroke Sea Horse that has sat for sometime. I barrel tested it after replacing the lower unit gear oil and cleaning the carb and now it will not go into gear. Any ideas? it seemed to be fine before it was stored away.

Gear oil was Ok ... not been sitting half full off water ?

Lubrication of the actual gear shift lever can be a problem although there is IIRC a grease nipple on there.

You should be able to feel some movement of the lever if the problem lies down below but if the lever feels solid then it has probably seized up due to lack of lubrication.

Try freeing oil, and warming of the casting around the lever (pour boiling water on it). If it really is stuck you'll have to take the power head off (and gearcase before that) to sort it out.

Not trying to shift into gear while not running ? If so turn the prop a bit while trying.

Odd model that 5hp not on the brp parts list. I think it is basically one made for the european market ( Is it made in Belgium? ) but pretty much the same as the 6 hp.

Keep an eye on the cooling. My 6 hp has recurring prolems with the grommet at the top of the water tube.

Sorry I have a few motors around here and you are right it is a 6, not sure what I was thinking. I did try to grease that fitting and the actual handle moves fine but seems like it may be the issue below (hope not but the handle does freely move)

Either there is a problem with the pair of bevel gears that link the shift lever shaft to the vertical shift rod (it turns on these rather than pushing and pulling) or there is a problem in the gear case.

To get to the bevel gears you have to take the power head off!

You can just see the shift rod where it passes from the steering swivel bracket into the foot of the exhaust housing. Maybe worth trying to determine if it is actually rotating when the shift lever is operated by looking at it there. It maybe be difficult to see if its turning or not but if you can see that it is it will save taking the power head off.

If the shift rod is turning the problem is in the gear case.

Wherever the trouble is You will have to start by removing the gearcase (You'll be wanting to renew the pump impeller anyway!) once off you'll be able to turn the shift rod (it comes away with the gearcase) and see if the gears engage. or not.
