I have an aluminum 1985 starcraft fm160 I bought recently. The livewell, which also served as a base for the side console seat, was removed and a pedestal seat was installed in its place. The plumbing was also removed except fot the intake/drain in the transom. I want to remove the drain and patch the transom. My question is how do I patch such a large hole in the transom?

Thanks, Dan...

I would suggest using a hardwood dowel slightly smaller than the drain hole and slather the hole and the dowel with 3M 5200 sealant. Wear latex gloves ciz it is a mess to work with but...It will Never come out or leak.

...DUH...A dowel rod! (visualize me slapping my forehead) Of course that makes complete and perfect sense. I've actually done that very thing to plug holes in woodworking projects. except for some basic wiring for lights and bilge etc on a 14' rowboat this is my first real boat project. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I'll take it from here. Thanks again woodonglass, I'm beholden to ya and more than likely as time goes by you'll be hearing more from me.

Leave it about 1/4" shy of the outside of the transom and fill that last 1/4" with JB Weld. You'll hardly be able to tell it's a patch
