First off, I apologize if I posted this in the wrong place. I honestly could not find the forum where you post a question for opinions on buying a boat. This seemed like the closest. :) Secondly, I am completely new to boats. All I know is what I've learned here in the last two days lol.
Anywho, I'm looking to get a boat, but Have been doing alot of homework first. I found in the paper a 1985 Sunbird with an OMC 175hp I/O. Great looking boat. Seats have all been redone and what not and so forth. After looking at the boat I came to this site and have since figured out the engine is a GM 3.8 liter, and the outdrive or sterndrive is an OMC 800 series stringer. My only problem with this boat is the motor mounts have pulled out. This is most likely due to wood rot I would assume? Upon inspection of the mount areas, I cannot confirm wood rot. The owner has made an attempt to fix by half heartedly grafting 1/4 plate steel to the, I guess stringer? and welding the motor mounts to that. He says its now the actual mounts, and not what the mounts are mounted to. He wants 2000 dollars. I am considering offering 1000 dollars. I cannot really take a ride in the boat, as the motor mounts are broken. Should I just walk away?

Don't be in a hurry. There are a lot of boats out there to look at. Walk away from this one.

OMC not good..... Sunbird construction quality not good either. Keep shopping or this one will clean out your bank account and still not be right.

Re: 1985 sunbird

I usually try to find the positive....but an old Sunbird with rot issues with an OMC is definitely NOT a good set up. Try to find something with a Volvo or Mercruiser (with the one exception being the Mercruiser 470, 170 HP 4 cyl). If an outboard try to avoid Forces but the other brands are all good.
