Hello,

I just purchased my first bayliner with a 125HP force motor. I was told after I purchased it that force has had alot of problems. The owners husband passed away and the wife tells me that the husband took EXCELLENT care of the boat and motor.

The motor is very clean but I have some questions.

1. The Force manual claims there is an overheat alarm on the motor. It does not have a picture so I do not know where to locate it. Does anyone have any idea where and what it looks like??

2. I am trying (like others on this site) to determin if the pump is working correctly. My father has told me to check to see if water is coming out of the holes below the cover and I have. Water is coming out but it is not squirting, its more like spraying. Is this normal?

3. My local Force parts guy says to check to see if the engine gets hot by putting my had on the side of the motor. The engine gets warm when running but I wouldnt say just warm. It seems to get pretty darn warm to where my hand cant stay there for a long time. According to him, this is not normal but I dont know...

4. I just purchased a mercury water pressure gauge for the Force motor and when reading the directions for the new gauge, it mentions Force motors and the screw on top of the head above the first spark plug. I removed the cap screw as mentioned and replaced it with the elbow for the water pressure gauge. Does anyone know what the gauge should read if it is working properly? Also, I ran the motor for about 30 seconds or so and still didnt get a reading, is this normal?

Sorry to type so much but I just want to make sure I dont mess this baby up.

BTW it started right up (After putting gas in the tank) after sitting for 2 years IN SOTRAGE) I did replace the lower end oil and there wasnt any water or metal inside the lower oil. That is a good thing right :)

I appreciate any feedback guys, thanks for sharing your time...

Tony,

Re: 1986 125HP FORCE MOTOR Questions

hello -i am no expert but have learned quite a bit from the guys here- the alarm on my bayliner is under the dash and you will hear it if it goes off-mine started after trolling for 15 minutes or so- this most likely is caused due to your impeller needing changing-its like a little paddle wheel that pumps the cooling water to the pump and engine-should be changed every other year as a maintenance item- the water spraying out is normal-but should be a heavy spray-it should be warm but you should be able to keep your hand under the stream indefinitely- have some one do a compression check on the engine-this will tell alot of the history of maintenance-like i said i am not an expert-just past experience-hope it helps

Firstboat,

1.Miller is correct the overheat alarm is under the dash. It is round and black plastic will have two wires attached to it.

2. If you are running the motor with ear muffs be careful force lower units are very tuff to get a good seal. What i do is put the muffs on and place the lower end in a big container full of water. This will make sure thar you are getting water into the lower unit. You should have a good "spray" coming out of the two holes in the back. You will not get a steady stream. If I were you I would replace the water impeller anyway since you don't know how old it is. Very simple job and inexspensive.

3. You should be able to place your hand on the head and hold it there for about 5 seconds without much pain.

4. Not sure what the water pressure should be.

5. I installed a temp gauge on my 86 Force 125. Made a contact sensor on the head operates between 110 and 120 degrees. Would recommend installing one for yourself. It is nice to know what the temp. is while you are running.

Good Luck

Re: 1986 125HP FORCE MOTOR Questions

after rereading your post I would absolutely replace your water impeller. If it was sitting for two years it has dry rotted.
