Hello new to the forum, I have looked for the last day and half with no results for anything on a 1986 14? Bayliner. So I have a question, sorry if this has been asked before. I?m looking to buy a 1986 14? Bayliner Fish and Ski Trophy Series with a 50HP O/B, this will be our first boat. Just wanted to know what other people think about this boat? All the good and bad. Thank for any input and thanks for the help.

Welcome!

As with any boat that old that has a lot of wood in its construction, check the deck, transom, and stringers for rot. Generally, if the deck is soft, you're looking a a big repair (ask me how I know that...).

There is also an entire website community devoted to that brand of boats.

Buying a boat

1st you need to decide what you want to use it for, fishing, cruising, or water sports.

2nd how many people adults, children you want on board of the average outing.

3rd outboard, inboard-outboard, or inboard power plant.

4th Budget, what you want to pay, and what you are willing to pay, when you find
Exactly what you want.

You can hire a marine surveyor, to inspect the boat, or you can do it yourself.

You are mainly looking for soft spots in the deck, transom, cracks, all signs of a rotten, under frame. You walk all over the deck, that a mallot, or hammer with wooden handle, using handle, tap all over the transom, a shape rap is good solid base, a thud, is questionable base.

The motor should be clean, no spots where the paint is discolored, or pealing from heat, having run hot. (This part for outboard motors Compression should be atleast 100psi, and within 10% of each other,)
Spark on all cylinders, good pee stream, check lower unit for water in oil.

The overall condition of the boat will tell you a lot, as to how it has been maintained.
boat motor combo, A 30 year old may be in better condition, than a 3 year old.

If well maintained it could be a gem. However that really is a bottom of the line entry level boat. Is that 50 perhaps a Force? Those can be problematic as many parts are no longer available since Force is out of business.

Dump the bayliner! the force engines were never the big powerhouse engine!
you should be looking for at least a 90hp,that will pull 1 skier.

Remember that boat is 23 years old and was not a "high end" boat to start with. If it is in excellent condition, it will have some value. If it is the typical 23 year old boat with an obsolete engine that has had very little care it is worth less than $0. The owner will probably need to pay someone to haul it away. Check it over VERY carefully. Remember that it has very little intrinsic value; you will not have to spend much in repairs or new upholstery before you have more in the boat than it is worth. If it is in great shape and you can buy it CHEAP, it could be a fun little boat. Also keep in mind that a 14' boat of that type is VERY small. Any more than 2 people on board and you are going to be falling all over each other. It is not like a 14' open John Boat. It has seats and consoles that all take up room.

Hi 86jac,

I've had one of these for several years and love it. Keep in mind this is a VERY small boat and big water on a busy weekend can be rough. On the other hand, it's great for early morning fishing trips.

I haven't had any trouble finding parts like impeller, coil, points, stator, even head gasket. That may be a different story for a cracked piston or connecting rod.

i also had one of these exact boats and loved it.. but if you had more then 2 peope in it, it was underpowered.. it wasnt really capable of skiing or tubing.. it was a great boat for me - just me and my daughter zipping around the river.. not fast, but fun..
