I have what I think is a 1986 15 hp rude. It's down at the marina and I can't check the serial number now. This motor is new to me and I know nothing of the history, however it seems to run great. The pee stream is always cold, even running WOT.....I'm assuming maybe the thermostat has been removed? Or is this normal? I'm bringing the motor home tomorrow and can post the serial number for better ID of year. Thanks in advance for any comments......John

Unless your engine is a later model production engine, there is no thermostat. Rude only made four 15 HP model in 1986. And only the late models were equiped with thermostats... So the tale tell stream will probably be quite cool because the water doesn't stay in the water jacket (cooling system) long enough to get too warm...

I don't think gm280 is correct. Marineenging.com shows eight models of 15 hp in 1986, and all of
them had thermostats. The thermostat is part 19 on this diagram from Marineengine:

Evinrude Cylinder & Crankcase Parts for 1986 15hp E15RCDE Outboard Motor

If your engine is '86 or newer, the thermostat is at the top of the head, and relatively easy to service. If it's older, then the
thermostat is at the bottom of the head, pretty well hidden by the lower housing.

Is that unique to the 86 Rudes cause my 77 Rude has a thermostat which is a bear to get being on the bottom of cylinder head/water jacket. Water from the pee hole stays cool even befor the stat opens up.

Water always runs out the indicator (pee stream) and it very well may be cool. When the motor warms and the thermostat opens, then water comes out of the port(s) in the rear of the exhaust housing, above the water(pushed by exhaust on it's way down and out the prop hub. THAT water should be warm, and shouldn't really come out until the motor warms up and the thermo opens..

Hope this helps.. good luck!
