Hi, I'm looking at a 1986(will confirm with ser.#) 20hp johnson, I currently have a 1984 15hp Johnson it has a choke ,and the 1986 20 hp has a primer?
From following the threads this seems correct, but when I took off the 20 hp engine cover there is no black plastic box(breather or air box?) just the opening to the carb does this sound correct.
On my older 15hp I can not see the carb at all.
This seems like an easy way to get a dirty carb! Is there a part missing.
If anyone could post a picture of their 1986 20 hp with cover off I would appreciate it.
One more breif question .Should the skag extend below the prop?

Thanks

There isn't much dirt/dust out on the water...without a cover...a bit more hp. Basically, it doesn't need one.

Mas,
Do you know if there is supposed to be a air breather, where I do alot of boating along the Ottawa River we have miles of Crown land that is a fine beach sand...great for kids/camping but we always seem to track alot home and if there are whitecaps going back to the launch we get sandblasted from the sand bouncing up....still something none of us complain about after a weekend out there, can't wait.:)

I had a 93 20hp

It also had an open carb.

I didn't like it as the foam on the inside of the hood was deteriorating, and you could see little specks on the body of the carb. It always worried me. But never a problem with that engine.

You don't need a breather box, motor runs better without. Ever see photos of alky burners with no cowling? they certainly didn't place airflow restrictors in front of the carbs. You can boost any post 1980 OMC 20 hp to 35 hp simply by buying a 35 intake manifold (reeds are same) and carburetor (or you can buy the carb and simply remove the intake mfld. and file out the opening).

I had the same motor, but Evinrude. It had an open carb and served me flawlessly for 16 years of salt-water use.

Right. A breather box has no air filter, it's main job is to reduce noise. Mercurys built at least through 1960 had no breather box, OMC motors often did.
