1986 20hp Merc help..

Much to my chagrin, I found a small puddle (size of an orange) of lower unit lube under my motor Saturday morning. I could see that the lube was coming from the joint where the prop and the lower unit meet, then running down the skeg and onto the floor. The oil was the exact color that it was when replaced last spring, not milky or off-colored at all.

Motor has been used 4 times this spring without any problems. Wondering what I'm getting into as far as finding/doing a fix here. Thanks for any and all responses.

CK the unit for water a level, if it has watr then I would drop the unit it sound like shift shaft seal

Pull your prop. See if the oil is coming from around the prop shaft or is it coming from the opening of the housing above the prop shaft. If its coming from the prop shaft you must replace the lip seals in the carrier bearing housing. If its coming from the opening above then its either your drive shaft seal(inner part of your water pump housing) or the shift shaft.
