1986 35hp merc shift shaft question

I bought a 1986 35hp merc that I just got running and will shift into reverse and neutral, but would not Go into forward drive. On further inspection, it appears that the shift shaft has a broken arm on it. The arm that has a washer in the iBoats picture has been sheered off. I’m wondering What that arm was attached to, and if there’s a lazy way I could fix this. Do I remove the power head and lower unit to fix this? I can’t find much help in the clymer online book.

are you talking about the shift shaft assembly part # 75104A7 ? If so the part is quite pricey. I connects to the lower shift shaft which is splined and fits into the spline on the bottom of it. You would probably be taking the lower unit off anyway as if it is new to you you would be servicing the water pump and lower unit itself. I just for you looked at my 1988 35hp. That shift shaft although sold as one piece with the arm attached seems to be two parts. The broken arm appears to have a set screw or possibly a roll pin holding it to the shaft itself. A quick glance tells me it can possibly be removed without the removal of the power head although you may need to remove the rewind starter, the carburetor and ? to gain clearance and pull it out. Maybe even the lower unit so that the shaft drops down a bit if you can not get the clearance you may need to remove the arm. If this procedure works that arm is out there in a salvage yard somewhere. I hope it works out for you. Then have fun reverse lock cam to function and reinstall that lower unit.
