1986 50 hp evinrude reverse prob.

model # e50belcd 50 hp rude 1986<br />any t5ime i put it in reverse it chatters.but it will go and run in reverse.what do i need to check? the motor is ideling around 650 rpm.

Check the shift linkage to make sure it's pushing the shift arm all the way into reverse. Another way would be to disconnect the shift linkage at the motor and try moving the shift lever by hand and see if it works right. Do this on the water with someone driving the boat at idle. If this works OK, your linkage is off or you may have a streched shift cable if you cannot adjust it enough to get reverse properly. Make sure you shift with authority. Don't slam it into gear, but don't baby it in, either.

Yes, over time they will stretch and may eventually break. Not a bad idea to change both the throttle cable and shift cable if it's been a long time... I've been stuck giving my boat throttle by hanging over the back of the boat and manually operating the throttle lever while the wife drove, because the cable broke. And it was only 5 years old. Could have been a bad cable, but who knows...

Best way is to measure the old ones length...OMC cable ends are standard...
